Four things that cannot stand alone

 

Intro:  Illustr. 124.  From the walls of Jer., the prophets saw themselves as watchmen, warning the city of coming disaster (EZ 33:1-9).  Is/Jer, before the capt.; Ek./Dan. after the capt.  Mountain-top prophecy.  Four things the prophets preach about, four things that cannot stand alone:

 

1.  IS 30:1,2,15:  A life without God

            the rebellious children, Neh. 9:28-29 (withdrew the shoulder); Rom. 1:21-22

            take counsel not of God, but of Egypt (a type of world); 1 Cor. 1:20 and 25

                        - Ps. 20:7

                        - Ps. 44:6-8

                        - Ps. 49:6, can’t buy your way out of death, only the blood of Jesus atones

            cover up sin

            the strength of Pharoah, the shadow of Egypt

 

2.  JER 7:1-15:  A religion without morality

            v. 10, lip service; Mt. 6:1-8; whited sepulchres, illustr. 107

            v. 11, Mat. 21:12-13

            v. 12, north of Jerusalem 18 mi., days of Eli, the ark was taken and the city demolished because of the people’s sin; the ark represents God’s presence, and he cannot work through us when we are insincere in our service

 

3.  EZ 16:58-63:  A judgment without hope

            I will remember; Rom. 8:24&25

            my covenant

            in the days of your youth

            then you shall remember and be ashamed

            1 Cor. 15:13-19

 

4.  DAN 9:24-27:  A future without Christ

            1/3 of the Bible covers prophecy

            v. 24, 70 weeks--shabuah, units of 7, meaning 490 years

                        - to finish the transgression--reference to rebellion against God

                        - make an end of sins--sin being put away during Messiah’s reign

                        - make reconciliation for iniquity--an atonement for sin by sacrifice (Christ’s)

                        - bring in everlasting righteousness--with sin taken care of, righteousness can now be a reality

                        - to seal up the vision and prophecy--there will be a time when all visions and prophecy will be fulfilled

                        - to annoint the most Holy-- the annointing of a future temple when Messiah’s reign will be inaugurated.

            v. 25, 445 B.C. plus 69 weeks (483 years) to Christ

            v. 26, the crucifixion; A.D. 70, Titus destroyed Jerusalem

            prophets did not know about the church

            v. 27, the antichrist will pledge protection of Israel for 7 years, but then Rev. 12:14 and 13:5.

            Rev. 16:1-12 for those without Christ
