Titus 3:3-7

The Road to Eternal Life

 

Intro:  Cretians.  Paul was reminding Titus about their travels on the road to eternal life.

 

1.  The Problem--All Have Sinned (Rom. 3:23)

- Foolish--without understanding

- Disobedient

- Deceived--planwmenoi:  (planets) false guide (Donald Guthrie, The Pastoral Epistles)

- Serving--slave

- Living--spending time with

- Hating

 

2.  The Remedy

- Kindness and Love of God--generous:  prized among rulers in Hellenistic times (J.D. Kelly, A Commentary on the Pastoral Epistles)

      -toward man--man does not seek God (Rom. 3:11; Eph. 2:5)

      -mercy/washing-with the word (Eph. 5)

      -renewing (or rebirth)--used by Greeks referring to periodic restoration of natural world; used by Jews referring to the New World coming with the Messiah; Renaissance (Donald Guthrie, The      Pastoral Epistles, BAG, TDNT)

- Not our works (Eph. 2:8&9; Is. 64:6)

 

3.  The Future

- Justified

      -declare righteous

      -Rom. 5:1

- Made Heirs (Rom. 8:17)--Howard Hughes and man with quarter
