Alfred Nobel became a millionaire with his invention of dynamite. When his older brother, Ludwig, died on 12 April 1888, a French newspaper accidentally ran an obituary of Alfred calling him a "merchant of death." Nobel, stunned having read the obit, established in his will the Nobel Prize awards given to those who did the most to advance the causes of peace, literature, and the sciences.
